Understanding the County’s Jurisdiction

Volusia County is responsible for stormwater management, drainage maintenance, and flood mitigation efforts in unincorporated areas. The County also plays a role in maintaining open-channel canals within the East Volusia Mosquito Control District (see pictures below) and drainage infrastructure along County-maintained roads within incorporated areas. While incorporated cities and towns manage their own stormwater infrastructure and regulations, Volusia County collaborates with municipalities on regional flood mitigation efforts when funding and projects extend beyond individual city boundaries.

To find out which canals the County is responsible for maintaining, use the link below. Once you access the map, make sure “Primary Drainage” canals is checked in the layer tab on the left. Additionally, if you live near a canal, you can enter your address and it the canal will show a deep blue if it is maintained by the County.
