Volusia County, located in the heart of the beautiful east coast of Florida, is a rapidly growing, progressive area. Sixteen municipalities make up the county, with Daytona Beach, DeLand, Deltona, Ormond Beach and Port Orange as the largest metropolitan areas. The county is conveniently located for easy access to major cities such as Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami.
Volusia's half-million residents are engaged in a variety of occupations, including tourism, retail farming, light industry, education and government.
Volusia's public school system is equally rich in what it offers. With over 62,000 students across 85 schools and more than 8,000 employees, the system is the state's 14th largest school district and the largest employer in the county. More than half of the district's employees are skilled teachers, all of whom are state certified. Approximately 40 percent of instructional staff have master's degrees, educational specialist degrees or doctorate degrees.
Elementary students can begin participating in programs such as French Immersion, Spanish and English Dual Language, and gifted classes at a young age. Secondary students can participate in advanced programs, such as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), and International Baccalaureate. VCS also offers 80 unique Career and Technical Education programs and academies in middle and high school where students focus on a concentrated area of study such as Entrepreneurship, Aerospace, Culinary Arts, Engineering, Agriculture, Health Services, Welding, Finance, Criminal Justice and Firefighting.
People who live and work in the county have a multitude of educational and cultural experiences and opportunities to explore. Families and individuals of all interests, backgrounds and abilities have access to an array of enriching learning opportunities.
Volusia offers higher educational options through Daytona State College, University of Central Florida, Bethune-Cookman University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Keiser College, Stetson University and Nova Southeastern University.
