Paul Aho is an abstract painter who was born in Milwaukee. He earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Florida State in 1977 and a master of fine arts in painting from the University of South Florida in 1979.
He has served as dean of the Armory Art Center School of Art in West Palm Beach, director of Palm Beach’s Art in Public Places program, program director for the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in Delray Beach, and on the faculty of Palm Beach Community College.
Aho’s lush geometric abstractions are composed of layers of paint that produce their effects through contrasts of hue and differences in texture. His paintings combine the simplified shapes and repeating forms familiar from historical geometric abstraction with a contemporary handling of paint.
“There’s definitely a watery effect and the sense of looking through one surface to another. My work reflects our collective, yet contradictory impulses – indulgence and denial, the spiritual and the concrete, the cognitive and the carnal. My intent is to create paintings that are undeniably poetic and unabashedly beautiful.” – Paul Richard Aho
