Rose Casterline paints from personal experiences, memories and observations. Gender roles and body language inspire her paintings. This questions our concepts of familiarity and requires the viewer to reconsider the roles and interactions of people. She is from Cleveland and has lived and exhibited in Central Florida since 1992. Her work has been exhibited and collected regionally and nationally the past few years.
Casterline received a bachelor of fine arts degree at Kent State University and master of fine arts degree at Savannah College of Art and Design. She has taught at Rollins College and Valencia Community College.
“This painting explores the dynamics of a generation where men and women tend not to intermingle. Their interaction is stifled; women gravitate toward the women, the men toward the men. One of my aims is to involve the viewer, sparking recognition and familiarity. Viewers easily can associate the garb and gesture of the figures with their own memories or experiences. My personal association with this painting takes me to the ethnic community of Parma, Ohio, a place where traditionally the men folk sit in the front seat of the Chevy as the women gab in the back.” – Rose Thome Casterline
