Bruce L. Marsh received a master’s degree in painting in 1965 from California State College at Long Beach and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963. Marsh has taught and developed curriculum at several colleges and universities. An accomplished artist, he has had several exhibitions throughout the world and has received numerous prestigious awards.

“The painting, an oil on linen, is an attempt to celebrate the extraordinary qualities of the waters of Volusia County; to wit, the Atlantic Ocean and the fresh water springs. The effort has been somehow to fix, in patches of oil paint, those elusive qualities, movement, reflection, transparency and color, which make water so endlessly compelling to watch. By translating that moving apparition into a still pattern of paint the artist hopes the viewer perhaps will pause to consider the nature of the perception of water surfaces, and perhaps to give some thought to the wondrous process of perception. The very purposeful combination, or inset, of the spring into the beach is to throw their qualities into contrast, and to reveal their essential qualities. It also serves to flatten the image, and to counter the strong illusions of space created by each surface.” – Bruce L. Marsh
