Best known for his sculptural reliefs Stephen Robin has received numerous public commissions, including three commissions from the federal General Services Administration Art in Architecture program.
“For many years, all my work has been about the reconciliation of sculpture and ornamentation. ‘Below the Surface #7’ is no exception. Below the surface has a double meaning, at once referring to the aluminum panel itself and what is literally below the surface as it pertains to the ocean, but in a non-literal way. Illusion is also an important element in the work. The modeled deep areas of the relief are meant to look fathomless, and yet are only 3/8" at the deepest point. It was also important to me that the work ‘float’ away from the wall, emphasizing the panel as an object.” - Stephen Robin
