John Wilton, a retired professor of digital media at Daytona State College, is well known for his multi-media works, digital photography and video. His paintings, often free-association collages of personal impressions and cultural icons, mimic the barrage of popular images we encounter in our multimedia age. Dr. Wilton has published various art education essays and a dissertation on desktop video art. As a mixed media artist, he has participated in more than 60 group and 30 solo shows, winning a number of awards along the way. Wilton maintains a studio in DeLand and has served as a judge for more than 30 art shows throughout Florida. In 1995, he was awarded an Individual Artist’s Fellowship from the state of Florida.
“Part of the Big Picture” consists of multiple pieces of acrylic on wood panel designed to resemble a jigsaw puzzle in progress. The puzzle includes images of marine life and Florida waterfowl. “My initial influences came from American Pop Art, particularly the appropriated and serially repeated images from popular culture. My process mixes several mediums, as well as stylistic conventions, even within a single work.” – John Wilton
